My journey into the world of Martial Arts started when I was just a teenager. I was being bullied at the time, which led to me losing all my confidence.
I came across a flyer at my local leisure centre informing people about Lau Gar Kung Fu lessons starting at the centre. The flyer stated that kung Fu would help students get fit and was beneficial for improving confidence, something I needed at the time.
I started my first lesson the following week. During the lesson I was made to feel extremely welcome and from the very start I felt part of the group.
Over the following six months, my confidence began to come back and I grew in strength, both mentally and physically.
As the years went by I made many friends at the club and within the association generally. Through my training, I've learnt a great deal about both the art of Lau Gar and myself as a person.
In addition to the Lau Gar syllabus I have gone on to learn Chin Na. Chin Na is a sub category of Kung Fu and can be found in many Kung Fu styles. The techniques focus on locks and throws and the use of pressure points to control an opponent.
I have also studied Krav Maga as well as Wing Chun over the years adding to my martial arts knowledge.
Despite learning several different martial art disciplines, my true roots lie with Lau Gar as for me it is a complete style. The style provides a vast range of kicks and sparring techniques, both for tournaments and for use on the streets. It also includes effective self-defence techniques, locks, throws, Tai Chi and Chi Gung.
I have not looked back since starting Lau Gar, There is something for everyone, so why not give it a go?
